Villarreal facts
- Founded in 1923, Villarreal didn't play in the top division of Spanish football until 1998/99, when they ended up relegated straight back to the 2nd division. They returned to the top flight in 2000 and have stayed their since. In 2004/05 they finished in 3rd place behind the big 2, and were rewarded with entry into the Champions League. See this official site page for more history
- Villarreal's nickname is 'the (yellow) submarines', as represented by their mascot 'Groguet, a bizarre human submarine thing (but at least it relates to the club in some way unlike our big green furry dinosaur). Groguet
isn't yellow, he's blue. But he's got a yellow shirt on.
- The club has only ever had one ground, 'El Madrigal'. It holds 23000. Some sources say only 14500 but this doesn't fit well with the reported average attendance of 17000 (as of 2006)
- The town of Villarreal, in the east of the country, has a population of 48000.
