ArseWEB - Arsenal non-playing staff
- Wenger was officially announced as the new Arsenal manager on Monday 16th Sept 1996, with his actual arrival at Highbury expected on 30th September. This followed a few
weeks of Arsenal trying to get him freed from his contract with Japanese club Nagoya Grampus 8. (read about the Rioch sacking and Wenger's appointment in the 1996 summer
rumour machine and the news reviews for August 14th and following)
- Wenger made his name managing Monaco, who he took to the French title in his first season with the help of Glenn Hoddle and Mark Hately.
- Some quotes:
"I would not be where I am today if it were not for Arsène Wenger." (Glenn Hoddle)
"He made me the footballer I am today"(George Weah)
- Before Wenger was appointed manager he was influencing the club. The signings
of fellow Frenchmen
and following his
recommendations. Specially for Highbury regulars who want to make Arsène and
the boys feel at home, here's a French-English dictionary of football terms. Unfortunately it doesn't
include "allez les Rouges" (which is occasionally displayed on the big screens
during matches of late), but we are reliably informed that this means "come on you reds".
