Centurions
100 goals from Bergkamp and Henry
Reviewed by Kevin Lovegrove
We're so spoilt for choice in these heady times that it's hard to
remember a bad goal from either of the maestros. It doesn't seem like 9
years since Dennis Bergkamp joined us, nor 5 since Henry first appeared
on the Highbury scene. Most dedicated Gooners knew of Bergkamp, few of
Henry, but they'd both spent frustrating periods in the Italian league,
Bergkamp abandoned up front and Henry plying his trade on the wing.
Wenger transformed them both, and this DVD (a disc for each) reminds us
of the growth of their respective games since they joined, with footage
and commentary on their first 100 goals for the Arsenal.
Of course we all remember Henry's superb effort against Manchester
United when he took a ball with his back to goal and deftly flighted it
over a hapless Barthez. And Bergkamp's majestic goal of the season,
leaving Dabizas with a sore neck trying to work out how Dennis had gone
one side of him, the ball had gone the other, and they'd met the other
side, as if prearranged, to guide the ball into the corner.
Oh yes, they are covered in great detail.
But so too is Bergkamp's fantastic hat trick against Leicester and
Henry's first European goals for Arsenal. In fact, for a DVD covering
the Wenger period, I'd forgotten just how many headed goals we actually
HAVE scored for that matter.
If Arsenal fans are art lovers, this is two discs of pure classics from
the great masters.
And I won't be hesitating when they bring out Centurions II either ;)
