Borehamwood (1) 1 - 6 (0) Arsenal

Borehamwood, Friday 9th July 1999

Friendly

Huge apologies for the inaccurate report posted by myself to the NewsReel earlier, and thanks to those who've sent in corrections.

It came as something as a surprise recently when I received an email or two in defence of TeamTalk. One of them said "at least they get Arsenal news every day" which as Simon points out is something of an admission (there isn't Arsenal news every day!).

But when I mentioned that someone had said we're too hard on them, I got a deluge of emails saying to keep up the critical approach, and no further messages in support of TeamTalk.

So I know that most of our regular readers will agree when I say that one should always take their stories with a pinch of salt, and anyone who swallows their bullshit must be a right idiot.

Ok. Confession time... :-)

Several correspondents have pointed out that the information contained in my newsreel item must have come from someone who got hold of the programme & goalscorers info, but didn't actually see the match. So, can you guess where I got the info....?

Yes indeed, this morning when I looked on the web to see what the result from last night was, the only thing I could find about it was TeamTalk's report. Like the aforementioned idiot, I relayed that to you via NewsReel.

I can't find any more accurate reports on the net at the moment (although I've seen Pennant's impressive goal and Adams' impressive miss on the telly now), but will link to them when they appear. In the meantime, here are some comments from someone who was actually there...

"I imagine that someone has given you a programme from the game and didn't bother to attend, leaving you with a report he concocted in the pub from the team-sheets.

I saw almost all of the game, but never sighted Stephen Hughes, Bergkamp, Overmars (except on the bench: he has a hamstring problem apparently); nor was Kanu there, anymore than Silvinho.

Malz and Luzhny both looked good; former had a great first-half, moving from either wing and looking dangerous in the middle too; latter started the second-half and was a powerful and dominating presence. Pennant's second-half contribution was amazing: he turned half of the Borehamwood team inside out with his speed and ball-control. Greg Lincoln (second-half) and Graham Barrett (almost throughout) were busy and very talented boys who thoroughly deserved their goals. Tommy Black and Ashley Cole had limited impact.

Adams, Dixon and Winterburn (all first-half) looked happy to be back, as did Upson, although Adams missed an open goal [rounded the goalie but hit the post, ed] . Winterburn had a spell in mid-field and was bloody good at it! Chris Wreh, notwithstanding two goals, dithered away repeated chances, as of yore, but it was good to see Manninger back (less so his dead-ball kicking, which hasn't improved...); he played throughout, leaving Lukic on the bench all evening. Use a different reporter next time, please....

report by Freddie Powlett

ps. Sorry, but forgot to mention poor Gilles Grimandi - who was actually involved in as much as anyone throughout the game and worked very hard."

Mel Siew adds:

"Just a quick email about your Borehamwood report. You were taking the piss about Bergkamp, Kanu, Overmars and Hughes playing weren't you?

Being there, it did strike me as an inaccurate report :)

Meanwhile keep up the (otherwise!) good work."

an anonymous correspondent (please give your name in future!) adds...

"Message: Kanu, Bergkamp, Overmars, & Silvinho did not play in the game and they we re not on the Subs bench. Had they of played the result would have been 20-0."

and Keith adds...

"Sorry to say but Kanu, Bergkamp, Hughes, Silvinho did not play !!

"Team was

Manninger, Dixon, Winterburn, Upson, Adams, Grimandi, Vernazza, Malz, Barret, Black, Wreh
Subs: Luzhny, Lincoln, Cole, Livermore, Pennant
Pennant was outstanding, Malz and Luzhny were impressive but then I guess they should have been!"
Many thanks to these correspondents for putting us right, and once again, I'm sorry for misleading. I won't let it happen again.
