Highbury, Monday November 8th 1999. kick-off 7.45
Testimonial match for Lee Dixon
Preview
- England vs Scotland
Before th ematch there will be an "England legends vs Scotland legends"
match, featuring the likes of Waddle, Hoddle, Beardsley, Sansom,
and Strachan.
- Tickets
At Lee's request ticket prices have been reduced by 25%.
See
this AFCi page for details. Tickets can be purchased by phone, by
calling at the box office in person, or over the internet.
- Arsenal team news
According to AFCi it will be the "strongest possible Arsenal XI". Wenger
has said that he won't be resting the England players (with the
England-Scotland game on Saturday in mind).
In addition Arsenal have confirmed that
Ian Wright will be making an appearance. We don't know about
Steve Bould.
update 08/11
The England players will not, after all, be appearing tonight.
Keegan has requested that they be rested and so be it. Dixon has stated that
he wouldn't want it on his shoulders if they got injured.
Check out the AFCi page on the match, which includes fans' tributes to
Lee and Lee's own "day-by-day account of his Arsenal life" (not for those
with an already low blood-pressure), a Real Madrid fact file, and the
revelation that he'd like to invite Hitler to dinner to see if the moustache
was for real.
- Real_Madrid team news
We can only hope that they bring a good selection of their stars.
Nic Anelka has been reported as saying that he doesn't want to
come, apparently he's concerned that he might get some stick from the Arsenal
fans. Now it looks like he's constructed an injury for himself to get out
of it according to the RMadrid.com unofficial site (see link to their news page, below), the injury
happened in training: he tried to shoot while his feet were nailed to the grass
(we suspect the work of an Arsenal fan).
Anelka update 05/11: We're starting to undestand the warped
logic of the man. It seems that when he said that it was a dream of his to
play for Real Madrid he meant just that and no more. Now that he has played
for them his new dream is to play for Lazio. A recurring dream, as it happens.
Real's injury list includes McManaman, Illgner, Hierro,
and Balic. Maybe some of these will be fit enough for a friendly,
and hopefulyl we'll get to see something of oft-rumoured Arsenal targets
Roberto Carlos Clarence Seedorf, and Christian Karembeu.
Real are in a bit of a crisis at the moment. They lost the (home)
Madrid derby 3-1 recently, leaving with 6 out of a possible 24 from
their last 8 matches.
See
this
news page from RMadrid.com for recent match reports and injury news.
update 08/11
Anelka has stayed in Spain. Real will be somewhat lifted after coming
back from 2goals down to beat Rayo Vallecano at the weekend.

- UK TV/Radio coverage
The match will be live on Sky Sports 1. But please note that these events,
more than any, are more fun if you're there. You can expect plenty of fun
and games off the ball and players having a laugh with the crowd,
especially Wrighty (see eg this
report of Paul Merson's testimonial). Chances are that on the telly
all you'll see is a fairly tame game of football.
