A veritable game of 2 halves. Arsenal started the stronger but before long Man Utd were dominating, and this continued till into the second half.
Man Utd went ahead thanks
to an extraordinary Beckham free-kick which hit the underside of the
bar and bounced out. Yorke managed to get his head to the ball first
and it looped back into the net despite (or possibly because of!)
Manningers efforts to scoop it out. Replays showed that the free kick
had crossed the line before bouncing out. So the goal was
Beckham's but if Yorke hadn't put the rebound in the goal never would
have counted.
Vieira went down rather easily in the box to win a penalty for the equaliser. But Irwin clearly had a handful of shirt so it was a penalty however Paddy fell, and it has to be said that from our point of view this is better than getting angry with the player who fouled him! It was a foul-tempered game at times and Vieira had aleadt been booked, along with Keown, following an incident in which Butt (?) appeared to go down very easily in our box and then kicked out at Keown when Martin went over to shout at him. Paddy got done for a push in the ensuing meleé. Kanu scored very nicely from the spot. It wasn't strongly hit but he sent Bosnich completely the wrong way. Kanu then set up a chance for Parlour whose angled drive came back out off the inside of the far post. But before long Kanu brought a Bosnich clearance upfield from our own half, hanging onto it while Parlour raced into the overlapping position again, and this time Parlour's shot went in off the post. A fact worth noting, and enjoying.... before this match United had gone 33 matches unbeaten. Their club record is 34!
