The lowdown from France on Thierry Henry's move to Juve

Wednesday 20th Januaray 1999

Many Gooners have been scratching their heads following Hnery's move to Italian giants Juventus.

What about English giants Arsenal?

We'd been led to believe that Wenger wanted him, that Henry's self-professed dream move would be to join his mate Anelka at Higbury, and that the only thing standing in the way had been Monaco's refusal to sell him.

New NewsReel contributor Jean-Francois Deveze reports from France...

The deal was concluded last sunday between TH and Mr. d' Onofrio who acted as Juve' s representative. "Le Parisien" report TH dealt directly with the italian club hence the furor of his agents Mssrs Roger and Larios whose contracts with the player run till the 20th of feb. (Other sources say their contract ended the day before or so he signed for Juve). They accuse AS Monaco to have forced the player to sign and urge Mr. Campora, ASM President, to reply to their questions : Why did he (Mr. Campora) refuse a GBP 12 million offer from The Arse and agreed a Juve GBP 7m deal ? (On the other hand, one must admit TH' s wages in Italy are said to fetch up to GBP 90,000 a month, no wages policy down there) Why Mr. Campora' s sole interlocutor when coming to players' transfer is Mr. d' Onofrio who is according to various sources a dubious person? Why TH signed for an italian club when he has always said english/spanish footy would suit him best?

For his defence Mr Campora will organise a press conference on the 1st of feb.

Not to mention the time when FIFA fined TH GBP 40,000 for having " signed " to Real Madrid a few months ago (surprisingly his club paid the fee, not him), it appears he is a spoilt brat.

So what about his future? Mr. Le Boss rang Henry monday morning, after the transfer was officially signed, and said afterwards he will however keep one eye on him. On and off the pitch, one can imagine...
