ArseWeb - Youth Team Page 1997-98Contents
As you may or may not know, the national youth team football setup has been changed this season, with the institution of the Premier Youth League. I've been trying to find out more information about this, but a search of the various online newspapers and news agencies threw up very little in the way of hard facts. However, the Arsenal handbook does have a list of Arsenal's fixtures, which start on September 6th. There are a total of 22 league games and then 4 rounds of playoffs (1st, 2nd, semi, and a 2-leg final). The fixture list implies that the regular league fixtures consist of home and away games against southern clubs (ie all the main London teams and Southampton), but only one game against 8 midlands and northern clubs. There are home games against Coventry, Leeds, Middlesborough and Sunderland, and away games at Sheff Weds, Derby, Nott'm Forest and Barnsley. Most of the big northern and midland clubs (ie Liverpool, Man U, Newcastle, Villa and Everton) are not participating, this year. If anyone else knows any more, I would be grateful for any information. Email me. Now that I have got hold of a table (see below), it seems that the league is split into two - a southern and northern conference. There then seem to be playoffs at the end of the scheduled league games - I would guess 1st in Southern vs last in Northern, etc in the 1st round, and so on. Anyway, the old South East Counties League is still going and, in an interview in the Coventry match program, Liam Brady said that the better and more experienced/promising lads would be playing in the Premier youth league while those who didn't would get regular games in the SECL. Last updated 24 August 1998 Arsenal youth team appearances 1997/98In the following table figures in brackets are goals, figures after the plus sign appearances as substitute. In the second column, an R indicates player has made reserve team appearances, a T indicates schoolboy, triallist or unknown. See youth squad for further details.
