St Alban's (0) 1 - 4 (1) Arsenal

St Alban's, Tuesday 8th July 1997

Friendly

Several of our new signings got their debuts in this match, which briefly looked like potential embarassment for the Gunners.

New defender Gilles Grimandi scored after only 5 minutes, and the score stayed at 1-0 till the 73rd minute when a fumble by keeper John Lukic allowed Simon Martin to equalise. But Isiah Rankin restored the lead just a couple of minutes later. The other 2 goals were both scored by Paul Shaw, one of them coming from a penalty.

As well as Grimandi, who came off after 65 minutes, Manu (pronounced Manoo, we hope!) Petit and Alex Manninger (replaced later by Lukic) both got their first starts. And Luis Boamorte and Alberto Mendez-Rodriguez both came on during the game.

Wenger is said to be very satisfied.

We don't have a detailed report of the game yet. It'll be interesting to see where exactly the new boys were playing, and to hear about the performances of Shaw and Rankin up front. More here as soon as it comes in...

Next match is at Orient on Saturday. Turn up early for the terraces, or ring Orient now on 0181-539-2223 to see if they have tickets left.
