UK Television coverage

Please see also this newsreel article and this one too. And more recent entries in the UK TV topic.

Many thanks to everyone who has sent information for the benefit of their fellow Gooners. I am sorry but the response has (already) been so overwhelming that it is impossible to thanks everybody by name.

Sky Digital
The matches on the ITN news channel are not available on Sky Digital. Sky Digital does carry a channel of that name, but for some reason they are not showing the champs league games on that version of the channel.
The matches which are on ITV2 however, are accessible using Sky Digital.

We have now heard a likely-sounding reason for all this. Sky Digital is available outside the UK. Showing the Champs League games outside the UK would be a breach of ITV's contract with UEFA. UEFA put these kind of restrictions into the contracts in order to enable them to make separate deals with broadcasters in different countries. So it's UEFA's fault.

Terrestrial Digital
Exactly the same is true of terrestrial digital boxes as of SkyDigital. You can get ITV2 and the matches shown on that channel. You can get ITN News but the version of the channel which you receive will not be showing the champs league games.

ITV misinformation
You may have seen this press release from ITV (Word document!), which stated that "ITV2 and the ITN News Channel are free-to-air digital channels available on digital terrestrial, digital satellite and cable services".
Our understanding is that this press release, released on 4th September, pre-dated the decision not to show the games on the non-cable versions of the ITN News channel.

Cable complications
If you have cable and aren't sure if you'll get the games, we recommend that you ring your supplier and hope they've got up-to-date information! Apparently some suppliers only send you ITN News during the day. It seems bizarre at first but when you think about it, what kind of important world events ever happen when the sun's gone down on England?

How to Complain
It's understandable and expected that not all of Arsenal's games will be shown on the telly. But the fact that the Champions (and the team which by all neutral accounts is the most entertaining English team to watch these days) are being passed over for the more accessible channels in favour of Liverpool, is simply absurd.

The ITV Network Centre can be contacted on 0207 843 8000. We've heard from several people whop on ringing were told that "the public prefer to watch Liverpool rather than Arsenal". An extraordinary statement, given that not only are Arsenal receiving more outrageously positive acclaim for their attacking football with every day that passes, but Liverpool have been going through a period of being a bit dull.

Makes you wonder if the people at ITV Sport have actually watched any football since Arsene Wenger took over at Highbury!

Early hours consolation
We should point out that ITV are repeating the hard-to-access games in the early hours of the morning. It ain't the same as seeing it as it happens, but it is something, especially for those who liek to have the games on tape.

Determining the placings in group stages

If any number of teams are level on points, their order is decided first by examining the "mini-league" formed by considering only the results between those teams.
There is a common misconception that this method could result in "loops" if there are more than 2 teams involved but this is not the case because the results are put into a table rather than considered pair-wise.
If teams are still level in the mini-league, according to points, goal difference and then away goals scored (note that goals scored is, unusually, skipped), then it goes to overall goal difference and overall goals scored.
It's weird that they skip goals scored in the mini-league, particularly as when it returns to overall stats goals scored comes after goal diffrence, and away goals aren't mentioned at all!

If it's still level the teams are ranked according to their UEFA cofficients at the start of the season (which is good for Arsenal, in the first stage at least, as we were first seeds in the group).

See this newsreel piece for more including transcription of the actual UEFA rules.
